Is God Obsolete? (Book Review)

Is God Obsolete? - Brad Burke - Victor 2006 - £6 Pb 160pp - ISBN 078144280X

The aim of Is God Obsolete? is to encourage Christians and non-Christians to think about their lives, and the extent to which God is a part of it. Dr Burke sets out this intention clearly from the start by quoting Thomas à Kempis, 'For a small reward a man will hurry away on a long journey, while for eternal life many will hardly take a single step.'

Using nicely set up, but sometimes drawn out, real world and imaginary scenarios, Burke provokes the reader to question who and what they serve in their lives. Perhaps the book's greatest strength is its ability to make people question their beliefs without causing offence, especially non-believers, and in a way that most people can identify with.

Burke backs up his assertions with references and he provides study questions for small group work. He is primarily writing to teenagers and young adults, so there are better titles if you want heavier theology. However, like the other titles in the An MD Examines series, the content does have equal relevance to a more mature audience. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for literature that can help one find God and better understand him.
