Life and Death. A Christian Medical Exploration of the Impact of Suicide

Please consider joining us in central London on Friday, 27th June 2025, for a one-day CMF Psychiatry day conference carefully and thoughtfully exploring suicide—a complex and tragic issue that is a particular challenge for those working in psychiatry and healthcare. Engage with interactive and insightful sessions with specialists in the field and brothers and sisters in Christ, sensitively sharing from their professional and personal experiences. This event will provide valuable opportunities for deep learning, networking, and reflection by exploring and discussing deep theological, cultural/societal, psychological, and occupational dimensions—including a discussion and Q&A session about the ethics of assisted suicide.

Open to professionals of all ages and levels of experience and expertise, this conference provides a unique space to engage with sensitive and important topics in a caring and supportive environment. It aims to encourage meaningful and purposeful dialogue whilst bridging the interface between the Christian faith and mental health.

We aim to provide opportunities for prayer during the day, offering moments to reach out to God, as we reach out to each other. Please consider being part of this important and impactful 2025 CMF Psychiatry (in person only) gathering.

Are you involved or interested in global health and mission?

Keen to both share and learn from lessons in the past but consider how European-trained healthcare professionals can partner in medical mission in the future?

        Who should come?

Perhaps you have been engaged previously in global health and mission work? Come and learn how needs are changing – share your experiences and learn how you could remain interested and involved.

And what if you are just starting out in your career in healthcare? What a perfect time to come and learn with other European colleagues some pointers for effective collaborative ways of working with national colleagues in global health and mission

We will have mission leaders helping us think biblically on such issues, clinical practitioners from whom we can learn, agencies that can facilitate your journey, inspiring stories, and come with your questions, concerns, hopes and dreams!

Christians across Europe will be gathering to consider how we partner in medical mission today. This event will be hosted in north west London, with easy access to tube lines from central London and to Heathrow or Luton airports.

Participants will have the opportunity to join small prayer groups and hear firsthand updates from members involved in healthcare work in the region.

Thank you to everyone who has supported previous CMF prayer calls.

Upon registering for the event, you will receive a Zoom link via email on the day of the meeting. We look forward to coming together in prayer and fellowship.

        Event Details

Dates: Monday 15 to Wednesday,  17 September 2025 (5pm Monday till 2pm Wednesday)

Venue: Highgate House, Northamptonshire, Grooms Lane, Creaton, Northampton NN6 8NN

This three-day residential conference takes place at a new Christian centre in Northamptonshire, offering ensuite accommodation, meals, refreshments, inspiring talks, diverse seminars, and activities – all set in a beautiful and peaceful environment.

This conference is for Christian doctors, nurses, and midwives who are approaching retirement, reducing clinical commitments, or already retired – seeking to embrace this new season with purpose, joy, and a deepening call to shine for Christ.

Shining ever brighter – navigating new seasons of calling with purpose and joy

We pour so much of ourselves into medicine – our time, energy, and sense of purpose. But as the shape of our work changes, whether by reducing clinical commitments or stepping into retirement, how do we continue shining ever brighter in God’s calling (Proverbs 4:18)? How do we stay fresh and fruitful in this next stage (Psalm 92), invest in others through maturing and mentoring (Titus 2), and navigate the physical realities of ageing while keeping our eyes on grey hairs and glory (2 Corinthians 4)?

This conference is an opportunity to reflect, pray, and plan for what’s ahead – letting go with grace, stepping forward with purpose, and shining ever brighter each day in God’s unfolding story.

Speaker: Chris Green is the vicar of St James, Muswell Hill, in north London. An experienced Bible teacher, speaker, and author of around a dozen books, he’s also approaching this next season himself. He wants to do more than paint some paintings and walk the dog! In three sessions, we’ll explore what the Bible has to say about this transition and consider some practical ways to serve God fruitfully beyond employment.

        Talks

        1. Psalm 92:1-15 Fresh and fruitful – How to approach a healthy next age
        1. Titus 2:1-15 Maturing and mentoring – What might best fill our diaries?
        1. 2 Corinthians 4:1-18 Grey hairs and glory – Physical realities and our wonderful future

        Event Details

RASH is a day course for all health professionals who want to support the health, system and spiritual needs of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.

God calls us to care for the stranger in our midst, to protect orphans and widows, to ‘act justly and love mercy’. (Micah 6:8) How does this translate to the way we care today?

Over the past 20 years, hundreds of thousands of refugees have come to the UK, with many seeking asylum. The ‘Refugees and Asylum Seekers Health Course’ (RASH) aims to equip Christian healthcare practitioners and others to:

        • Improve knowledge of the healthcare needs, responses and challenges for refugees and asylum seekers in the UK
        • Hear examples of good practice
        • Foster a dialogue among those working with refugees and asylum seekers for mutual encouragement and support
        • Inspire creative ways to engage with health systems for better provision, support, and care

The programme is an interactive learning experience led both by those who have been refugees and those who are healthcare professionals in this field. Local charities or churches working with refugees and asylum seekers will also find this day useful. If you encounter people from outside the UK in your everyday practice, then this is the day for you.

Podbabies: Who are they kidding?

Ectogenesis – the gestation of children in artificial wombs – has long been considered by many feminist writers as the ultimate liberation for women from the tyranny of reproduction and the limitations it imposes on women’s autonomy. It has also been said to be necessary to ‘challenge traditional patriarchal family structures, and thence all other […]

Canada’s home MAiD disaster?

My first recollection of the impact legalised euthanasia and assisted suicide would have – for that is what Medical Assistance in Dying (the innocent-sounding MAiD) is – was at a conference in Paris. Celebrating two Black British nursing pioneers

To mark Black History Month, we wanted to tell the story of two prominent Black nurses from British history, Mary Seacole and Chief Kofoworola Abeni Pratt. Having reasonable freedom to act in accordance with our conscience is something that Christian healthcarers rightly value. A number of recent events and reviews over the last year or so highlight some of the perennial vulnerabilities of conscience provision but also some reasons for hope and optimism. WMA International Code of Medical Ethics The World […]

Praying for patients – punishable or permitted?

Brain death, resurrection, and Archie Battersbee

Since June, when I last wrote about the deeply distressing case of Archie Battersbee, his ventilator was eventually switched off on 4 August. Soon after, he was declared dead when his heart subsequently stopped beating. In the evidence they gave at the court hearing on 6-8 June, the healthcare professionals caring for Archie all agreed […]

Unethical and outlawed are not the same

Roe v Wade

Last week we witnessed an event that I never thought I would see in my lifetime: the overturning of Roe v Wade. This 1973 Supreme Court decision held that the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution, the right to privacy, protects a woman’s freedom to terminate a pregnancy. Half a […]

Wisdom of God or medical wisdom?

I have been working as a midwife for a few years now. As a believer, I am constantly fascinated by God’s design and wisdom and have been from day one of my training. Sometimes it appears to me as a midwife that in the last few decades, science has been catching up with what was […]
