Background

Kamakwie Wesleyan Hospital is located in Kamakwie Town, Sella Limba Chiefdom, Karene District in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. The population of the town which is predominantly from the Limba, Temne, Susu, Fullah and Loko ethnic groups is a little over 8,200.

The Medical Mission to the Sella Limba Chiefdom by the American Wesleyan Missionaries started in 1939 with the aim of demonstrating the love of God through healing. A hospital building was erected in 1959 and was manned by the American Wesleyan Mission up to 1995 when, due to the rebel war, was handed over to the Wesleyan Church of Sierra Leone.

The hospital is 171 miles away from the capital city of Freetown. It's strategically located thus rendering services to over five Chiefdoms in Northern Bombali/Karene with a population of well over 200,000 people. The population of the three immediate Chiefdoms (Sella Limba, Sanda Loko and Tambakka) is 141,969 (Male=70,239 Female=71,730; source Statistic Sierra Leone 2015 Population and Housing Census).

The present structure consists of one or two medical doctors, clinical health officers, midwives, nurses, paramedics and support staff, summing up to eighty two on monthly payroll.

The hospital is a 110 beds hospital with different departments (Outpatient, Inpatient, Laboratory, Radiology, Operating theatre, Maternity, Nutrition and Physiotherapy). Over one thousand patients are treated on a monthly base, and up to 60 deliveries per month are conducted in the maternity unit.
