Medical Service Ministries: Student Prize 2009

Published: 15th April 2009

Medical Service Ministries was founded in 1903 as the Missionary School of Medicine. This provided basic healthcare training for those working in developing countries with Christian organisations, and taught simple diagnosis, first aid and treatment of common conditions and tropical diseases, to those with no medical knowledge and working far from professional medical help. As missionary organisations began to arrange more healthcare training for candidates, and as receiving countries developed their own healthcare services, the number of students needing such training declined and the School closed to become the grant-making trust, Medical Service Ministries (MSM) in 1996.

MSM now encourages Christian healthcare workers in various countries to develop their skills and experience, so that they can more effectively share the good news of Jesus Christ through a holistic health ministry. For more details see the MSM website.

MSM is launching a competition, open to UK medical students, designed to encourage the development of a long-term vision to spread the good news of Jesus Christ alongside the ministry of healthcare to the poor, the vulnerable and the sick. This will take the form of an essay, and a prize of £500 will be awarded for the essay which, in the opinion of MSM, best describes the student's worldview and vision that underlies their desire to spend time working in a developing country under the auspices of an national or international Christian organisation.

Students wishing to compete are invited to submit an essay of between 1,000 and 1,500 words, to MSM before the first day of July 2009. The author's name, home address, email address, telephone number, date of birth and particulars of studies or prospective degree must be submitted on a separate sheet or attachment, linked to each page of the essay by a unique five digit numerical identification code chosen by the candidate. These details will be kept confidential until adjudication is complete. Entries submitted by post should be sent to The Administrator, MSM, PO Box 13, Newton Abbot, TQ13 8WZ. Essays submitted by email should be sent as an attachment to resources.msm@btopenworld.com Each entry will be acknowledged individually and entrants should ensure that they receive one. If there is any doubt or difficulty concerning this aspect of the competition, a helpline is available: 01647 440113.

Rules: Feedback cannot be given on individual essays other than to the successful candidate. MSM will hold the copyright for the winning essay. The copyright of all other essays remains with the author. The closing date and time is midnight 30th June/1st July 2009. The adjudicators' decision is final.
