ss nucleus - autumn 1998, Editorial

Editorial

'All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing', so said Edmund Burke. We can easily see our Christian duty as merely being nice and avoiding certain wrong things. Indeed, many would like it that way. However, if we remain silent, there will always be a vocal, godless minority working hard to have things their way.

Nucleus grapples with several relevant topics in this issue. Doctors and politicians are hotly debating the lowering of the homosexual age of consent. Trevor Stammers writes that legal equality for homosexuality will have dangerous consequences. Yet many will not appreciate this unless more speak out and risk attack.

The status of the embryo may seem a cerebral matter, but has great practical implications. If the embryo is human, then society is guilty of murder on a grand scale. Deadly Questions tackles several relevant objections.

Global population control may be important, but Greg Gardner informs us that it does not always proceed in an ethical manner. Underhand tactics and hidden agendas are often part of the plot, whilst a dangerous eugenic tendency simmers in some of its proponents.

Christians know that medicine provides only part of humanity's needs. We are created both spiritual and physical, needing both types of therapy to be truly healthy. Unfortunately, the gospel is often seen as an unwelcome intrusion in a world where personal choice is the popular cry. We cannot accept this, for we serve a God of absolute truth who will judge the living and the dead. Even the GMC allows us sufficient freedom to express our faith, where appropriate, with gentleness and respect (1 Pet 3:15).

These are just some of the areas where we need the courage to speak out and turn the tide in the direction of truth. We may encounter difficulties, yet we must do what we know is right. As in so many things, we have Jesus as our best example, with his persistent refusal to keep quiet and avoid rocking the boat. With amazing skill and tact, but yet with dogged determination, he always spoke out for the truth. His popularity, his reputation, even his own life were not cherished enough to shut him up. The Lamb of God was also the Lion of Judah, in fierce opposition to those who were diluting, twisting and concealing the truth that gives life.

'Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, "But we knew nothing about this," does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?' (Pr 24:11,12)
