As medicine has become ever more effective and sophisticated, the perception of the doctor has changed from that of the carer to that of the technician. Is that all we are, though? While offering the best available treatment is essential, it is not enough on its own. Medicine involves more than the rational application of the latest technology. Being ethical, respectful, compassionate, and honest are all vital to being a good doctor. We also need a concern for equity and justice for our patients.
These values are fundamental, but where do they come from? And how do we put them into practice? Above all, as Christians, what does our faith have to say about the fundamental valuesat the root of our profession? In this short book, Sam Leinster takes us through the history of the development of these values and looks at the biblical perspective on so much of what underlies 'good medicine' in the twenty-first century.
Sam Leinster is Emeritus Professor of Medical Education and former Dean of Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia, Honorary Consultant Surgeon at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and past President of the Christian Medical Fellowship.
