We run a project on the beautiful western coast of the Philippine island of Luzon as this is where our local partner NGO, Philippine Outreach Centre Ministries (POCM), is based. POCM provides non-medical services to prisoners - for example, reaching prisoners with the Gospel and providing children's homes to care for prisoners' children who would otherwise be on the streets.
What do we want?
We have an established system of short-term medical teams going out four times a year: these medics do medical missions in prisons, carry out child health surveillance on the prisoners' children who are in POCM's care, and give medical help to POCM's local staff. Now we are supplementing these intermittent teams with a continual presence in the form of a rolling series of medical volunteers.
Who are we looking for?
We are searching for volunteer Christian doctors to live and work alongside POCM staff for four months to a year. A single person is fine; equally, we will happily consider a married couple as long as the doctor's spouse is either a fellow healthcare professional or else has other skills of benefit to both us and POCM. This post can be tailored around a trainee such as someone on an F3 year, a GP trainee or a medical trainee. A more senior doctor with experience in paediatrics, A&E or general medicine is most welcome. And a GP, either recently qualified or more mature and looking to do a sabbatical, is ideally suited. Successful candidates are inducted thoroughly by our medical director during one of our quarterly team trips and thereafter line managed closely via the internet in addition to face-to-face during subsequent quarterly visits.
