26th September: Take Time to Pray

For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is in him. Psalm 62:5

I got up early one morning,
and rushed right into the day!
I had so much to accomplish
that I didn't have time to pray.

Problems just tumbled about me,
and heavier came each task.
'Why doesn't God help me?' I wondered.
He answered, 'You didn't ask!'

I tried to come into God's presence.
I used all my keys at the lock.
God gently and lovingly chided.
'Why, child, you didn't knock!'

I wanted to see joy and beauty.
But the day toiled on, grey and bleak.
I wondered why God didn't show me.
He said, 'But you didn't seek!'

This is so often typical of a doctor's life, even a Christian doctor. When was the last time that we actually got up early to spend time with the Lord because we had a lot to do on that day? When Jesus had a hectic day, he went away to pray. Let us focus more on the source of our strength and our life, Jesus Christ, for he said, 'I am the vine... apart from me you can do nothing'. I am sure that not only can we accomplish more, but we shall be a more effective witness in our surgery, and we can be of even greater help to our patients.

Let us see it this way:

I woke up early this morning
And paused before entering the day.
I had so much to accomplish
That I HAD to take time to pray.

What the writer of Psalm 62 says is worthy of much thought:

For God alone my soul waits in silence, for my hope is from him.
