NMC review of the Code and revalidation survey:
a brilliant opportunity to speak into the shaping of nursing and midwifery practice as Christian healthcare professionals
The NMC is currently reviewing the Code and the revalidation process ‘to make sure they reflect the realities of modern health and social care, and respond to new and emerging challenges in practice’. They have launched a survey to give professionals and students a chance to share their views on the future of the Code and revalidation. They are looking to hear your perspective on:
- How the Code could be improved, whether through new or strengthened standards, additional guidance, or better supporting information.
- How revalidation could work better-for example, by ensuring it helps professionals deliver safe, effective care, remains robust, and is accessible for everyone on the register, regardless of role or background.
As Christian healthcare professionals this is a timely opportunity for us to be able to shape practice so that we can truly live and speak for Jesus Christ in our places of work. We don’t want to be prescriptive about how you answer the questions but here are some important areas that you might want to pray about and mention:
-
Spiritual care. Give equal weighting to the addressing the spiritual needs of patients, which has been shown to improve holistic wellbeing.
-
Appropriate discussion of beliefs. Clearer guidance in the Code and wording that protects an individual from being penalised for sensitively and respectfully discussing beliefs with line managers and patients.
-
Freedom of conscience protection. The Code needs to be clear that those who choose to conscientiously object can do so without being discriminated against and fearing reprisals.
- The use of AI. Careful thought needs to be given to the use/restrictions of AI in nursing and midwifery as its role in healthcare becomes greater.
Next steps:
-
Pray that God would bring about a kingdom transformation of the NHS through the review of the Code and revalidation. That Chrisitan nurses and midwives would be able to shine God’s light into the dark places and bring hope and healing where there is despair and hopelessness.
-
Respond to the NMC survey by 31 December 2025.
-
Share this survey with other Christian nurses and midwives so that God’s love for humanity is clearly expressed throughout the Code and revalidation process.
-
Consider whether you would like to sign up to the NMC community of interest– a chance to get involved in the review.
