Every Christian health professional has a unique opportunity to improve their patients’ physical and spiritual health, but many feel frustrated by the challenge of integrating faith and practice within time constraints and legal obligations.

However, the medical literature increasingly recognises the important link between spirituality and health and GMC guidelines approve discussion of faith issues with patients provided that it is done appropriately and sensitively.

Christians are called to be ‘the salt of the earth’. Saline Solution is a course designed to help Christian healthcare professionals bring Christ and his good news into their work. It has helped hundreds become more comfortable and adept at practising medicine that addresses the needs of the whole person.

        Wholeness in Christ

‘As you received Christ Jesus the Lord,  so, walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith’  (Colossians 2:6-7)

Westerners today enjoy longer lives and greater comfort than preceding generations but increasing numbers struggle with their mental and emotional wellbeing. Christian doctors are not immune to these struggles, especially working in a system that often feels like it is stretched to breaking point. Surrounded by philosophies of self-help and mindfulness, manifestation and resilience, we can lose confidence in Christ. We need to recover an approach to life and work that is grounded on Christ. That’s what the apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, presents to us in Colossians. By digging into this letter, we’ll see that Christ is supreme in everything and sufficient for our emotions and thoughts and we’ll learn how a Christ-centred vision can inspire and sustain us in our work and relationships. This is an opportunity to return to our roots in Christ and to be built up in him so we can serve others with thankfulness and hope.

Speaker: Paul Coulter lives in Northern Ireland with his wife Gar-Ling (a geriatrician) and their two teenaged children. He started his working life in medicine before moving into cross-cultural pastoral ministry then taking theological studies to PhD level and teaching practical theology. Currently, he is Head of Ministry Operations with Living Leadership and serves voluntarily as Executive Director of the Centre for Christianity in Society. He has written four books, including Serving Two Masters: Probing the Tensions Between Faith and Science in the Art of Healthcare (CMF, 2022) and Keeping Care Pastoral: The Heart of Gospel-Shaped Pastoral Care (PESIOD, 2022). In his spare time, he likes walking fields and hills with his dog, reading about history, and writing poetry

The health service day to day feels chaotic; too much demand, not enough resource, changing priorities and pressure, pressure, pressure……

How do we respond as Christians?

All our speakers have experience at the sharp end of the complexities and challenges of modern healthcare, but have also thought deeply about their faith and how to apply it when ‘the rubber hits the road’ on Monday morning.

        Speakers

        Chris Holcombe
Chris is a consultant breast surgeon and clinical lead for breast services in Swansea, and has held multiple leadership roles in the NHS locally, regionally and nationally.

Out of work he enjoys time with grandchildren, in the mountains or on the coast in West Wales and is involved in his local church and leads CHLN on behalf of the Christian Medical Fellowship.

        Catriona Waitt

Is Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Global Health with a particular interest in medication use among pregnant and breastfeeding women. Cat runs a research group in Uganda with collaborations around the world; and is a mother of five.

Perhaps when you were younger it felt extremely exciting to ‘live on the edge’, and take bold steps to live by faith in a world which seems increasingly disinterested in spiritual things. But now you face increasing leadership responsibilities at work, in church and in the community, and are navigating the joys of raising adolescents whilst aware of your declining physical strength – you can feel hard pressed on all sides! If so, this short talk aims to give a fresh perspective on how to keep serving God as you lead ‘through the chaos’.

        Oge Chesa

Oge is the convenor of the quarterly NHS Strategic Prayer Summits and weekly NHS Strategic Prayer Storms that have been praying around NHS matters since 2015. The vision, which is based on Hebrews 8:4-5, brings together those with a heart for the NHS to ‘stand in the gap’ to see that the NHS in every facet is aligned to the agenda of Heaven.

Oge will look at what Jesus would do if he was in the NHS today.

        Mark White

Mark is Chief Technology Officer at a large NHS Trust in London. He is a clinical scientist by background, mainly working in imaging and surgical navigation, then moved into digital leadership nearly ten years ago, joining his Trust’s senior directors’ team during the Covid pandemic. He lives in London with his wife and two daughters.

Mark will be helping us think about what the Bible has to say about healthiness and longevity, and whether that perspective can help us understand our ever-increasing expectations of the National Health Service.

In a rapidly changing cultural landscape, we often feel caught in the tension between our Christian faith and a secular workplace. The NHS and wider society seem to be increasingly at odds with biblical principles or even faith in general. But how can we, as Christian doctors, navigate this cultural divide while staying true to our faith?

In this series, we’ll explore some of the questions we face as a Christian in modern medicine, including:

        • How do I stay faithful to Jesus when cultural pressures clash with biblical truths?
        • What does it look like to engage with critical theory, postmodernism, and secular ideologies in healthcare?
        • How can I advocate for life when the ethics of abortion, euthanasia, and patient care are hotly debated?

We’d love you to join us in this series of online talks on the first Monday of a month where we’ll provide foundational biblical principles to help us wrestle with the big questions life and medical practice can pose.

        Next session: Burnout and resilience

        with Steve Sturman

Monday, 1 December | 7.30 pm to 8.30 pm on Zoom

“Why another session on Burnout might be worth the effort…”

There’s always a risk when you keep hearing about something,  that you stop thinking it is relevant anymore. Self-care, pacing, wellbeing are all vogue terms that after a while, can cease to connect with us.  Views about Burnout range widely from scepticism to obsession. What is the truth? Should I be concerned? What does the Bible say about this? And what difference does being a Christian make? In this seminar we will explore the impact of burnout on clinicians and the way they care for patients. There are serious implications for getting it wrong and significant dividends for getting it right.. it might just be worth the effort.

Steve Sturman has been involved in developing Pastoral Care and Wellbeing in CMF for the last few years. He has been in leadership in his local church for over 30 years. He is a Neurologist specialising in Neurorehabilitation, working in Birmingham.  He also supports medical training and discipleship in a Christian Hospital in Egypt, and has been doing this since 1991. He has learnt about burnout progressively as things have just got busier and busier. He is pleased to be able to share what he has learnt, in practice, so far…”

When is a baby not a baby?

Last week Panorama ran an ‘investigation’ into pregnancy advice centres which they claimed give misleading information to pregnant women. They found 57 centres listed online, could find no fault with the advice given by 34 of them and sent an undercover journalist in to investigate three. The programme was, as is typical, biased and unbalanced. […]

Neuro-silicon interfaces: a new mode of being?

The idea of humankind being merely machines has a long history, stretching back to Julien Offrey De La Mettrie’s Man a Machine, published in 1747. The ‘man-machine’ of the 18th century was, of course, a clockwork automaton. It was not until 1945 that Norbert Weiner, in his ground-breaking Cybernetics – Or Control and Communication in […]

Desperate for organs

‘What can a man give in return for his life?’ asks Jesus rhetorically of his disciples and the crowds following him (Mark 8:37, RSV). In doing so, he implicitly acknowledges that people will go to almost any lengths to save their own skins. They will also do the same for those they love. If the […]

I’m a Christian working in the NHS. The system is broken. Here’s how you can pray for us

I’ve just got home from a shift in the emergency department (ED). The hospital is in ‘critical incident’ due to overcrowding, but it’s been like this for weeks. 100 people or more in a department designed for 25. Queues of ambulances are unable to offload for hours because there’s no space. Patients who have had […]

Podbabies: Who are they kidding?

Ectogenesis – the gestation of children in artificial wombs – has long been considered by many feminist writers as the ultimate liberation for women from the tyranny of reproduction and the limitations it imposes on women’s autonomy. It has also been said to be necessary to ‘challenge traditional patriarchal family structures, and thence all other […]

Canada’s home MAiD disaster?

My first recollection of the impact legalised euthanasia and assisted suicide would have – for that is what Medical Assistance in Dying (the innocent-sounding MAiD) is – was at a conference in Paris. An Ontarian ethicist enthusiastically explained to us how, among other preparatory measures for MAiD, all the mannequins in the resuscitation training rooms […]

Celebrating two Black British nursing pioneers

To mark Black History Month, we wanted to tell the story of two prominent Black nurses from British history, Mary Seacole and Chief Kofoworola Abeni Pratt. Both faced prejudice but battled through to gain recognition for their work. Their stories are a reminder that Black nurses have been making a significant contribution to the profession […]

Acting with a clear conscience? WMA, GMC, BMA, and moral injury

compass

Having reasonable freedom to act in accordance with our conscience is something that Christian healthcarers rightly value. A number of recent events and reviews over the last year or so highlight some of the perennial vulnerabilities of conscience provision but also some reasons for hope and optimism.
