Submission to World Medical Association Public Consultation on a draft revised version of the International Code of Medical Ethics

The World Medical Association (WMA) has developed the International Code of Medical Ethics as a canon of ethical principles for the members of the medical profession worldwide. The Code was adopted by the World Medical Association (WMA) in 1949, to complement the newly adopted Declaration of Geneva: The Physician’s Pledge. Since then, the Code has been amended three times, most recently in 2006.
Work on the current revision began in 2018 and the WMA Council approved this version for public consultation in April 2021. The WMA is not a legislative body, but does carry significant influence with global health bodies such as the World Health Organisation.
CMF has submitteda response that is focused on Paragraph 27 of the draft revision, and that concerns a physician’s freedom to conscientiously object.
