Late on Thursday 19 March we learned details of the expected last minute amendment to the clauses on assisting suicide in the government's Coroners and Justice Bill. The coalition of which CMF is just one member body, Care Not Killing, put out an immediate press release which was widely picked up in the media on Friday. In their press release, Care Not Killing said: 'This proposed amendment would turn a rare exception into a rule and would put British citizens at the mercy of the very worst laws anywhere in the world. It would allow people in this country to assist someone to travel to countries offering euthanasia or assisted suicide for any and every reason regardless of safeguards.'
The House of Commons begins its Third Reading of the Bill today and Patricia Hewitt's controversial amendment may be debated. There may even be a division on it.
