A meta-analysis published on 16 September in BJOG: an International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology has suggested that women with a history of termination of pregnancy may have an increased risk of low birth weight and preterm birth in subsequent pregnancies. The study found that these risks increased as the number of terminations increased. Researchers from Canada reviewed 37 studies at low to moderate risk of bias and included data from 1965 to 2001 and a range of international locations.

In our October 2007 submission to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee's new 'Inquiry into Scientific developments relating to the Abortion Act 1967' we stated 'there is robust evidence that induced abortion increases risk of premature birth in subsequent pregnancies. Such premature births cause neonatal mortality and ongoing disability, with significant economic costs.' That evidence is now even stronger.
